Ephesus is important for many reasons. It is central to Paul and Acts, it became a centre of early Christianity, and the first of seven messages in Revelation 2-3 was directed “to the angel of the church in Ephesus.” I have often looked for a book that gives an overview of the knowledge available today. Trebilco’s opus magnum fills this gap. Trebilco is also the author of Jewish Communities in Asia Minor.

In ch. 1, Trebilco describes the context: the city, the Artemis cult, the imperial cult, and the Jewish community (pp. 11-52). Ch. 7 is devoted to “Revelation 2:1-7: The Proclamation to the Church in Ephesus and the Nicolaitans (pp. 293-350). Ch. 8.4 focus on the wider culture and the readers of Revelation: acculturation, assimilation and accommodation (pp. 393-402). In ch. 9.3, Trebilco analyses “Material Possessions and the Christians in Ephesus according to Revelation” (pp. 434-443). Leadership and authority in Revelation is the subject of ch. 10.3 (pp. 490-503). The role of women in Revelation is discussed in ch. 11.3 (pp. 540-550). Trebilco looks at the issue of self-designation in Revelation in ch. 12.5 (pp. 577-586).

Ch. 13 is an analysis of “The Relationships between traditions and communities in Ephesus,” and Revelation is treated in 13.3 (pp. 614-626). A full Table of Contents is available from the publisher (here).

The bibliography is huge: 54 pages (pp. 719-771), and there are indices of References, Authors, and Subjects and Places.

Mohr Siebeck provides a long list of reviews here.

The original German edition is available for €149.00 (see here), but the American edition is only about $62 or £37.

“”Every student of the letters of Paul, the Acts of the Apostles, and the Book of Revelation will find much of value in ‘New Testament Cities in Western Asia Minor’,” writes W.
This work by one of the most learned scholars and experts on ancient Rome is a valuable investigation of the history of the Roman Near East from 31 B.C. to A.D. 337.

Reviewed by Tony Keen i Bryn Mawr Classical Review 94.05.17.

Amazon’s synopsis:
“From Augustus to Constantine, the Roman Empire in the Near East expanded step by step, southward to the Red Sea and eastward across the Euphrates to the Tigris. Fergus Millar shows the reader this world as it was forged into the Roman provinces of Syria, Judaea, Arabia and Mesopotamia.

“His book aims to convey the sweep of history as well as the rich diversity of peoples, religions and languages that intermingle in the Roman Near East. Against this complex backdrop, Millar explores questions of cultural and religious identity and ethnicity – as aspects of daily life in the classical world and as part of the larger issues they raise.

“As Millar traces the advance of Roman control, he gives a picture of Rome’s policies and governance over its far-flung empire. He introduces the reader to major regions of the area and their contrasting communities, bringing out the different strands of culture, communal identity, language, and religious belief in each.

“The Roman Near East makes it possible to see rabbinic Judaism, early Christianity and eventually the origins of Islam against the matrix of societies in which they were formed. Millar’s evidence also permits the reader to assess whether the Near East is best seen as a regional variant of Graeco-Roman culture or as in some true sense oriental.”

Cambridge etc.: CUP, 1991. A new second edition: 2006. 346 pp.

This book, based on Trebilco’s dissertation, describes throughout 330 pages the various aspects of the Jewish communities in Asia.

This study is important because Revelation shows that the relationship between Christians and Jews were not necessarily a good one. Although this relationship is debated among Revelation scholars, Trebilco’s research is valuable giving precise information about the Jews in Asia.

Unfortunately, of the seven cities mentioned in Revelation, only Sardis is treated by Trebilco. Chapter 1 is a survey of the Jewish communities in Asia Minor in literary sources. Chapter 2 treats inter alia Sardis and Chapter 6-7 discusses the question of syncretism and ‘God-Worshippers’ in Asia Minor. Chapter 8 discusses the general position of Jews in the Greek city in Asia Minor. More here.
